College & Career Connections

For me, Khalil, this externship is basically a continuation of my junior year internship of writing articles and concert reviews. In college, I will probably study journalism & this externship has really given me a chance to see how my life will look in college: writing reviews of artists/concerts, and writing articles on various topics.

Second "photo essay" set

Foster The People at X-fest! Couldn't take good shots of the bands because I was really far away from the stage and I didn't have such a great camera.

Externship Journal: Self-advocacy

*LATE* How have I advocated for myself during this externship, or seen advocacy demonstrated in other situations? During my externship time so far, I have advocated for myself by writing strong, educated concert reviews and other music related articles that I will soon release online. This helps me strongly with my future career of being a music journalist, and this prepares me for the type of writings that I will have to be writing soon. Commented on: Beckett & David

Internship Journal #2

So far for our externship, we have gone to two concerts: Secrets & Blessthefall and the North Park Festival of the Arts. Both of these concerts have been fun, and we certainly have learned more after attending each of them. At the North Park Festival that occurred last Saturday, Jazmin and I, Khalil, only stayed to hear the last two bands that played on the main stage. Those two bands were The Intergalactix and The Creepy Creeps, the latter of which was a local San Diego band. At the beginning of the Creepy Creeps set, many people wore their lucha libre masks and a man dressed as an astronaut came out running, waving an American flag. The band appeared on stage, with every member wearing huge chimpanzee masks. Two female dancers also appeared on stage. I actually attended a board meeting yesterday, May 19th, at the Price Center at UCSD that talked about shutting down the famous San Diego concert venue the Che Cafe. The meeting was very interesting and I got to hear from many volunteers and attendees and why they believe the Che should stay open still. Unfortunately, I could not attend the voting meeting because of another commitment at the time. These experiences were fun, and I hope that we go on many more like these! Internship Journal #1

Today Khalil and I went to watch the band Secrets at Soma, but only got to hear one full song and half of the other song they were playing when we got to the stage. There was a change of schedule that changed the time that Secrets would be playing and instead of being the second band to play, they were the first. This would've worked out great, but when we went to get the photo pass, we found out that we weren't on the list that allowed us to get a pass. Khalil called Secrets tour manager and about 20 minutes later he came outside to hand us the pass. I was really surprised that he was the tour manager of the band because at first I thought he was just another fan who was trying to sell me a ticket, but it was definitely him.
Once we were inside, I quickly got to work and I immediately realized that there was no way that I would be getting any great pictures. I needed to be in the front center of the stage to get great pictures, but there was a large crowd already there. So instead I settled for a corner where I somewhat got clear shots of the guitarist and the rest of the members. It wasn't until moments later, when I was informed that the guitarist I was taking pictures of, wasn't actually a member of the band. I then thought that if I was actually a professional photographer, I'd probably push my way through the crowd that had gathered in the center. But everything happened really fast and thats the first thing I learned; I need to be more assertive and a fast thinker. I wonder what other things I'll learn tomorrow with Alan Hess the Professional Photographer.

First Impressions from Day One

Jazmin & I actually started our externship a few days earlier than everyone else, on Friday, May 9th. Unfortunately, she could not attend the first concert that we were supposed to attend. I, however, am used to writing concert reviews so there was nothing really interesting that occurred there. Something that we are really excited about is having the opportunity to interview artists and review/photograph them live. Things that we are worried about are not being able to attend each concert that we had originally intended to attend.
